Why do you need a water softener?

Frequent plumbing and boiler issues are a key reason to install a water softener. However, there are important exceptions. Softened water is not recommended for preparing infant formula or for individuals on a medically advised low-sodium diet. In addition, some people prefer the taste of unsoftened or filtered mains water.
